Here we are, another year older and another year wiser. Well, for sure that year older. With so much media attention going to the University of Oregon this past football season, and rightfully so, I'm left baffled at just one thing. For the record, I'm a husky. I hate Oregon, I hate Chip Kelly, and I hate Phil Knight. This is where I'm baffled.
Knights wealth due to Nike, has given him the opportunity to be a major donor to the University of Oregon and its athletics. I have no problem with that since if it were the University of Washington on the receiving end, i'd be ecstatic. No, my gripe is with all the other northwest colleges that choose to go with Nike. Sure, it's a popular choice and I'm sure Nike treats them well. What recruit wouldn't want to go to a school with all Nike? To me, it just seems like you're supporting a company who's head donates a godly amount of money to the University of Oregon. Is that what Washington, Oregon State, Washington State, etc. really want to do? At that point, I may consider going with Adidas.

The "Rooney Rule". I didn't even know the NFL had such a rule that requires team's to interview minority candidates for head coaching and senior football operations positions. I know this is a touchy subject, but I stand one-sided. WE HAVE A BLACK PRESIDENT! I think it is time to say that Black people have every opportunity, and it is up to them to take advantage of them. I don't think there needs to be a rule forcing teams to interview someone of a minority.
When a head coaching position is open, the organization should interview the best possible candidates. If that includes someone of a minority or not, who cares. You are out there to hire the best one for the job. In this day and age, I don't think organizations are going to stay away from minorities if they have the resume they are looking for. Hire who you want, and interview who you want. That's just what I think. All I know is that I wouldn't want to be of minority and interview for one of those football positions knowing you were called in to simply fulfill the "Rooney Rule"!

What an embarrassment the Pac-10 basketball is this year! So many bad losses at the beginning of the season. Cal vs NMU. Stanford vs USD. Stanford vs ORU. Oregon vs Montana. OSU vs AMCC. OSU vs Sac St. USC vs LMU. UCLA vs CSUF. UCLA vs LBSU. Arizona @ SDSU. Not to mention the poor performances of WSU @ Kansas St, Washington @ TTU and Cal vs Syracuse. I'm sure there's more too, I just can't remember them all. That was only the start!
The opening week of the Pac-10 conference play was just as shocking. Who would've thought Oregon would go up and sweep the Washington schools? Or who would've thought Oregon State would get blown out by 51 at home to Division II Seattle University? Or that UCLA would beat Cal?
Don't get me wrong. I love the Pac-10 and will back them 100%. But the entire conference has been atrocious from top to bottom. Just when you think Washington will be one of the elite teams, they fall to Oregon. Same story with Washington State. It will be interesting to see who emerges at the end of the season. Who knows...the conference champ could have 9 losses!
