09/24/13

As my wife prepares a magnificent dinner tonight, I can't help but remember a past dinner. Kev, my roommate in college and wonderful friend to this day, took it upon himself to make dinner for the entire house. Extremely thoughtful. Well, when things didn't go quite as planned, the Beef Stroganoff came out with a burning garlic flavor unlike any garlic flavor I have ever consumed. And yes, tonight my wife is making beef stroganoff, and I couldn't help but think of that meal Kev prepared a handful of years ago. So this meal tonight, it's to Kev! Signing off.

What a great day it is today! January 6th, 2012 unites in marriage one of our members. Beard is biting the bullet and taking the leap. Though to some it may seem unreal, I can tell you first hand, it’s truly happening. Last night was the much-anticipated rehearsal dinner and rehearsal. Though I could not make the dinner due to a scheduling conflict, the rehearsal lived up to the hype. Mainly for the reunion. Chuck made the flight up to not only witness a great friend get married, but to be part of the most disciplined and well-respected ushering crew. Though I still have not seen or read my assignment out of the wedding playbook, Chuck filled me in, and I’ll have my wristband to reference throughout the night in order to save timeouts. Chuck has been assigned to balcony duty, while Pasta and I have been thrown to the curb, literally. We will be ushering (monitoring) parking, which I still have no idea what that entails. Park and walk in is pretty clear, but we’ll do our best, and in downtown Portland, it is definitely needed. At some point during the pre-game ushering, I will get the call in from the bullpen to pitch middle relief. A grandma on the bride’s side needs an usher to walk her in, and who better than Nitro.

It is time that I introduce two other ushers, who are part of the Fontana family. Quincy(Steve) and Deception (Nate). Though Deception was never a full-time resident of Fontana, he holds honorary membership status. Quincy, on the other hand, completed two years of service at Fontana, and after his five year waiting period, will be on the ballot for induction into the Fontana Hall of Fame.

Rehearsal went well, and I feel as though the ceremony will run real smooth. It’s so exciting to see Rondie leading the charge of this occasion. Upon exiting the rehearsal, all the guys headed over to a gym to play some hoops. A lot of fun running up and down the court with the guys again. Looking forward to tonight to hear what Kev can bring to the reception via his best-man toast. Cheers.

Signing off.

FIRE NICK HOLT! Is that loud enough?! Coach Sark, can you hear me?! In one of the most amazing offensive performances of any bowl game to date, the losing team gets to hear all the gripe about a poor defense, while the winning team revels in their potent offensive performance. Since the Baylor Bears were the latter, the Huskies are left to figure out and correct the defensive draught that has been in place since Nick Holt took over as D. Coordinator at the University of Washington.

Coming over from USC, all anyone talks about in the media is how well-respected Nick Holt is, which somehow should equal success. And yes, his defenses did have success down at 'SC, but how many first-round draft picks did he have? Enough to play a basic defense and let them make plays. Well that works with elite talent. One thing missing with Nick Holt is the ability to devise a game plan with HIS defensive players that can slow down the opposition. Instead he draws up a plan to stop an offense, and attempts to get his players to fill those roles without considering his player's strengths and weaknesses. The problem is that he does not have those players who can realistically play that style. Three years was enough time to try and use his method, and was enough time to expose Holt's weaknesses. If Sark wants to continue his rise at UW, he must fire Nick Holt. He is the only aspect holding this program back, and quite clearly as the Alamo Bowl showed, the most important.

Coach Sark must go out and find an up-and-coming defensive mastermind. One that can draw up and execute defensive schemes against an offense, with lesser talent. Yes, Washington's defense is young and inexperienced, and will only get bigger and better with another off-season, but they won't reach their full potential with a defensive coordinator who can't work with less than first-round talent. That's why a new defensive coordinator with proven success with lesser talent, would be huge in revitalizing the defensive side of the ball. Maybe go out east into the SEC and try to pull a coach? I'm sure the defensive coordinator position at the University of Washington would entice a bright mind. All I hope for is a change, and one quickly.
